Surface Preparation and Sandblasting Contractor for Federal and Industrial Facilities
Goggans Coatings handles surface preparation for painting and coating projects on military bases, federal facilities, and industrial sites across Alabama and the Southeast. Abrasive blasting, pressure washing, coating removal, and concrete prep are done by our own crews with our own equipment.
If you're a prime, GC, or facilities manager with a coating spec that calls for a specific prep standard, this is what we bring to the job.
Prep Decides Whether the Coating Lasts
Most coating failures start before the first coat goes down. Paint peels off chalky siding. Epoxy lifts off a slab that's holding moisture. A roof coating lets go at the same seams that were already failing. The product rarely causes the failure. The prep does.
We don't subcontract prep, and we don't estimate around it. The crew that preps the surface is the crew that coats it, so nobody hands off a surface they wouldn't put their own coating on.
Prep Methods We Use
We match the method to the substrate and the coating spec:
Abrasive blasting (sandblasting) to strip rust, mill scale, and failed coatings from structural steel, doors, frames, and tanks
Pressure washing to remove dirt, chalking, mildew, and loose paint from exterior walls, masonry, and roofs
Coating removal on steel, concrete, and masonry where the existing system has failed
Mechanical grinding and shot blasting to open concrete and set the surface profile before epoxy flooring
Hand and power tool cleaning for touch-up, tight areas, and occupied spaces where blasting isn't practical
Patching, crack repair, and joint repair on drywall, masonry, and concrete before coating
When a spec calls out an SSPC standard, such as SP 6 commercial blast or SP 10 near-white blast, we prep to that standard and document it.
What We Prep
Structural steel and metal: doors, frames, handrails, columns, tanks, and equipment
Concrete: warehouse floors, motor pools, maintenance bays, and bunker interiors
Masonry and block: exterior walls, stairwells, and corridors
Drywall and plaster: interior walls in offices, barracks, and administrative buildings
Roofs: metal panel and low-slope roofs before roof coating
Older structures: RRP-compliant prep where lead-based paint may be present

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Surface preparation is the cleaning, stripping, repair, and profiling done to a surface before paint or coating goes on. It removes what the new coating can't bond to, such as rust, mill scale, failed paint, dirt, and moisture, and gives the coating a surface it can grip.
-
Sandblasting is the common name. Abrasive blasting is the accurate one, since most blasting today uses media other than sand. Both mean propelling an abrasive at a surface to strip coatings and corrosion and create a profile for the new coating.
-
Yes. We blast and prep structural steel, doors, frames, and equipment on federal facilities, following the safety plan, containment, and documentation the project requires.
-
We grind or shot blast the slab to remove old coatings and contamination, test for moisture, and verify the surface profile before choosing the coating system. See our epoxy flooring process.
-
Yes. Our crews hold RRP certification for renovation, repair, and painting work where lead-based paint may be present, and we follow the containment and cleanup practices it requires.
-
Yes. We use hand and power tool cleaning, phased scheduling, and dust control in occupied spaces, and save open blasting for areas that can be isolated.
